ISLE OF MAN NETWORK
What can we say about our Network; well we have been in existence for the last 4 years and some of us moved section from the old Venture Scouts to the new Network.
We feel we are unique because, unlike the UK, our Network draws its members from all of the Explorer Units on our Island, draws members from outside of the Scouting family and has active members who are based off-Island at universities in the UK.
We are based in the Isle of Man if you had not guessed. The Isle of Man is part of the British Isles but not part of the United Kingdom. We are a country in our own right with our own 1,000+ years old Parliament (Tynwald) and our own laws. We are situated in the middle of the Irish Sea midway between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. This small country has a land mass of 227 square miles and measures 33 miles by 13 miles.
The total population of the Isle of Man at the last count was approx. 75,000.
There are 15 Scout groups on the Island with varying combinations of Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, and there are 4 Explorer Units based in the North, South and East of the Island.
The Network wears the same scarf as any Island based leader, as we represent the whole Island. The scarf is made from Manx woollen tartan, which is made on the Island with the Manx three legs of man symbol embroidered on it. Network members may in addition also wear their former Scout Group scarf if they wish to show where there Scouting background is from.
NETWORK IS FOR THOSE AGED 18 to 25
WHAT DO YOU DO?
The Network can be whatever you wish to make it, being adults pretty much anything is acheivable, so long as its fun, enjoyable by all and organised and communicated well.
Some of the activities undertaken have been Karting, BBQ's, expeditions to foreign countries, camping, team building, archery, bowling, kayaking, hiking, achieving awards, running events for younger sections.
